Solstice

solstice

(Instrumental)

The winter solstice marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. In the northern hemisphere it happens in December. Ancient Europe german and scandinavian pagans celebrated “Yule” in this period and many of its traditions were adopted in the Christmas celebrations such as the Christmas tree. Many pagan gods such as “Sol Invictus” (Syrian, later Roman god) are associated to the winter solstice.

The melody in this musical piece is inspired by the Christmas Carol “Carol of the bells” based on a traditional Ukrainian folk chant “Shchedryk” consisting in the repetition of four notes.
