Winterspirits – New Video

“Rauhnächte” – 12 days and nights starting from 25th december – are drawing nearer! It’s a special time in the year, where the nights are still long, but the days are getting slowly longer too.

It’s a time full of legends (i.e. The Wild Hunt), rituals and witchcraft. This video and the music tell the story of the battle between light and dark, forces of nature, kind and evil spirits – Winterspirits!

The Wild Hunt (“Die Wilde Jagd”) is the name of a european folk tale, where a group of supernatural hunters ride over sky and earth. The passing of this hunting party has different meanings: it’s an omen for war and destruction, for death of the witnesses, but it also can be a good omen.

The hunting party consists of a variety of dieties, spirits, animals: Odin, Wotan, Frau Holle, Perchta, Diana, dogs, wolves, horses and so on. They make a lot of noise and it is recommended to stay at home and perform rituals (i.e. fumigate “Räuchern”) or pray.

The Wild Hunt can be interpreted as a product of fears, as people were afraid of the nocturnal winter storms and the closer communion with the dead during the dark midwinter period seemed uncanny to them.

Forest of thorns

In the spirit of Advent and Christmas – we present you our new rendition of the old german Advent song “Maria durch ein Dornwald ging” (Maria walks amid the thorns) with classical guitar, soft strings, percussion & ethereal pads. The melody probably dates back to the 16th century. By origin it was a pilgrimage song that initially was spread orally in the 19th century, starting in the Catholic Eichsfeld. The first publication of the song has been printed in 1850 in Germany.

The text of the song tells the story of Mary who walks through a dead thorn wood, carrying a child (Jesus). The dead forest is a symbol of infertility and death and begins to bloom when Mary walks through it with the divine child.

Of dreams and stars

This new collection contains 5 remixed songs from former recordings that we didn’t publish online. We wanted to gather a bunch of older recordings and create an ethereal, calming and ambiental vibe throughout the listening experience.

“Selene” was a song we wrote a very long time ago in honour of the greek moon goddess. It mainly features classical guitar and some eerie ambiental sounds in the background. “Nightwalk” is a little nice bluesy tune played with classical guitar, drumset and bass. We were imagining some stray cats wandering around at night and having fights. “Aurora” is again a very ambiental track, which showcases wide soundscapes and plucked strings of a harp. There follows the celtic tune “O Carolan’s dream”, written by Turlough O Carolan, an irish blind harper and composer from the 18th century (1670-1738). The last track of the collection is “Into the void”, written with space images in mind – it’s goal is to transport the listener into new and unknown places with the deep sound of didgeridoo and ethereal voices.
